Conformal Cooling

Cooling of injection mold tooling is crucial to the performance of the tooling, influencing both the rate of the process and the resulting quality of the parts produced. In complex parts, maintaining an even temperature throughout the mold can be difficult, leading to hot spots and poor part-quality. A new solution to this problem is called conformal cooling.

The concept behind conformal cooling process is that all heating/cooling lines in the tool follow the contour of the part, maintaining an optimal distance from the part surface in order to maintain a constant temperature. This is especially useful in tight areas on a part, such as in ribs or clips.

Studies have shown that using conformal cooling methods can significantly reduce cycle times, between 30% and 60% depending on the complexity of the part. Not only does this reduce the timing needed to run the part, it will reduce the piece price of your order!

At Linear Mold & Engineering, we use Direct Metal Laser Sintering – DMLS to grow tooling inserts with cooling lines already designed inside. These completely dense and highly accurate inserts allow us to put the cooling lines where they need to be, in order to achieve maximum part quality and lower costs.
